Buying Centipede Sod in Coastal NC: How Much You Need, What Drives the Price, and How Installation Works

Rolled turf grass ready for planting at Grants Creek Nursery.

Running out of centipede sod halfway through installation leaves you with exposed soil and another order to arrange. Ordering too much creates a different problem: extra pallets that cannot sit around while you decide where to use them. Accurate measurements matter because sod is a perishable purchase.

Before comparing sod for sale, work out three things: your actual planting area, the preparation required, and who will install it when it arrives. Those decisions determine both your order and your total project cost.

Grants Creek Nursery has been family owned since 1968. Our business includes a 42-acre nursery, landscape contracting, and sod farming, serving Jacksonville and the surrounding Onslow, Carteret, and Craven county area.

How to Measure Your Yard and Calculate Pallet Coverage

Sketch the areas you want to sod. Break an irregular yard into smaller rectangles, measure each rectangle in feet, then multiply length by width. Add the results and subtract patios, planting beds, sidewalks, and other areas you will not cover.

For example, a 40-by-30-foot section contains 1,200 square feet. A second section measuring 20 by 15 feet adds 300 square feet. Your planting area is 1,500 square feet before accounting for cuts.

Add 5% for a simple layout or closer to 10% for curves, narrow strips, and numerous obstacles. That makes the example order 1,575 to 1,650 square feet.

Ask how many square feet the quoted pallet covers. Pallet coverage is not universal. If a supplier quotes 450 square feet per pallet, divide your required square footage by 450. This is an example, not a statement of our pallet size. Confirm whether partial pallets are available before rounding up and paying for more material.

Is Centipede the Right Grass for Your Coastal Property?

Centipede grass sod suits many sandy, acidic coastal soils and homeowners seeking relatively low fertilizer and mowing requirements once the lawn is established. It is a practical option for a general residential lawn with suitable sunlight and limited wear.

It is also slow to establish and traffic-sensitive. Sod provides immediate coverage, but that green surface still needs roots before it can handle regular use. A busy dog run or frequently used play area may call for another grass.

Bermuda is worth considering for sunny areas where traffic tolerance and faster recovery matter more than low maintenance. Zoysia can offer better wear tolerance and, depending on the variety, more shade tolerance than Bermuda, although recovery from damage can be slow. No option solves deep shade or poor drainage. NC State Extension’s lawn selection guide explains these tradeoffs.

What Drives Centipede Sod Installation Cost?

The material quantity is only one part of the bill. When comparing sod in Jacksonville, NC, ask whether each estimate includes the same work.

Square footage affects material and installation labor. Delivery distance, truck access, and the distance workers must carry sod from the unloading point also affect the job. A backyard behind a narrow gate is different from an open front lawn.

Harvest-to-install timing matters because material, transportation, and labor must be coordinated. A delayed project can require rescheduling or replacement material if harvested sod deteriorates.

Site preparation can change the estimate substantially. Existing turf removal, disposal, grading, tilling, soil testing, and correcting drainage are separate tasks from laying sod. DIY installation removes hired installation labor from the quote but adds your equipment rental and time.

Estimates are quoted per site. Send measurements, photographs, your address, and the proposed installation date so the scope can be assessed.

Prepare the Site Before Scheduling Delivery

Kill existing turf and weeds before installation, then remove the old grass mat and debris. If using an herbicide, follow its label, including any waiting period before planting. Laying new sod over dead grass still creates a barrier between roots and soil.

Complete a soil test early. Centipede prefers a pH near 5.5, so do not automatically add lime. Apply starter fertilizer only as directed by the test; a generic high-phosphorus product may be inappropriate.

Loosen the upper 2 to 4 inches of soil, addressing deeper compaction where necessary. Identify buried utilities and irrigation components before digging. Remove rocks, break up clods, and rake the surface smooth.

Grade so water moves away from the house without creating problems elsewhere. Allow loosened soil to settle and firm it without compacting it heavily. Before delivery, moisten the prepared surface without turning it into mud.

Plan to Install Within 24 Hours of Delivery

Centipede sod must go down within 24 hours of delivery, ideally the same day. Harvested sod loses moisture, and stacked material can build up heat. A pallet is transportation packaging, not a storage solution.

Have the ground, helpers, tools, and water supply ready beforehand. Lay pieces against a straight edge, stagger joints, and fit edges tightly without overlapping or stretching them. Trim around curves, roll for soil contact, and water completed sections promptly.

If a delay becomes unavoidable, contact the supplier immediately. Keep uninstalled material shaded and arrange help. If advised, unstack and lay pieces flat temporarily to release heat. Do not assume shade or watering makes a pallet safe to leave through the weekend. Reschedule before harvest whenever possible.

Diy Installation versus Hiring a Crew

DIY centipede sod installation is most manageable on a smaller, accessible area with preparation already complete. Expect repeated lifting, carrying, kneeling, and cutting. Depending on the site, you may need a sod cutter, tiller, wheelbarrow, grading tools, and lawn roller.

Hiring a crew makes more sense when the project requires drainage work, substantial grading, difficult access, or more material than your helpers can install promptly. Our landscaping and sod installation services can be quoted around those requirements.

Either route includes a 30-day watering commitment. Arrange reliable coverage and someone to check moisture, including during weekends or travel. Follow our 30-day sod care and watering protocol, adjusting for rainfall and site conditions.

Ask for any warranty in writing. Material defects, installation workmanship, and establishment coverage are different things. Confirm the coverage period, exclusions, watering responsibilities, and claim procedure. Do not assume a warranty covers drying out, delayed installation, pet damage, or drainage problems outside the agreed scope.

The Best Installation Season in Zones 8a and 8b

For coastal North Carolina properties in zones 8a and 8b, late spring through early summer is generally the most straightforward window. May and June often offer warm growing conditions and time for establishment before winter.

Soil temperature matters more than the zone label. Warm-season sod needs soil above approximately 55°F for several weeks to produce roots effectively. A warm afternoon does not mean the ground is ready.

Summer installation is possible with dependable watering and prompt placement. Late-fall or winter installation carries greater establishment risk because centipede growth slows or stops. Schedule around soil conditions, water availability, and your ability to finish promptly.

To plan your order, request a site-specific sod estimate. Include your measured area, location, preparation needs, and whether you want delivery alone or installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much centipede sod do I need for my yard?

Measure only the areas you intend to cover, not the entire lot. Divide irregular spaces into rectangles, multiply length by width, and add the sections. Subtract beds and hard surfaces, then add 5% to 10% for cuts and curves. For a measured 2,000-square-foot lawn, that means approximately 2,100 to 2,200 square feet. Confirm the supplier’s pallet coverage and minimum ordering increment before converting that figure into pallets.

How long does it take centipede sod to root?

Under favorable growing conditions, sod may become anchored enough for an initial mowing in approximately 14 to 21 days. That is a planning range, not a guarantee of full establishment. Cool soil, drying, excessive moisture, and poor soil contact can delay rooting. Gently check several edges for resistance rather than relying only on the calendar. A piece that lifts easily is not ready for mowing or normal lawn traffic.

What is the best month to lay centipede sod in North Carolina?

For coastal North Carolina, May is often a practical target, with June also providing a useful installation window. Choose a period when the grass is actively growing, the soil is warm, and you can manage the establishment watering. Conditions vary across the state, so a coastal schedule should not be applied automatically to colder locations. Avoid choosing a date immediately before travel, even if the month otherwise looks suitable.

Can I lay centipede sod over my existing lawn?

No. Existing grass and thatch interfere with direct contact between the new sod and prepared soil. They also leave uneven areas and allow surviving weeds or grass to compete with the installation. Kill and remove the existing turf, address the soil and grade, and prepare a firm, smooth surface first. If using an herbicide, follow all label directions and planting intervals. Mowing the old lawn very short does not replace proper removal.

How soon can I walk or mow on new centipede sod?

Limit walking to essential installation and watering tasks until the sod has anchored. Keep children, pets, and repeated traffic off the area during that period. First mowing is often possible around 14 to 21 days in favorable conditions, but only when the sod resists gentle lifting and the ground supports the mower without rutting. Remove no more than one-third of the blade height. Delay mowing if pieces shift or the soil remains soft.

Do you deliver sod outside Onslow County?

Our service area includes Carteret and Craven counties as well as Onslow County. Contact us to confirm sod delivery availability for your specific address, order size, and proposed date. Delivery scheduling and charges depend on the location and logistics, so being within the broader service area does not establish a fixed delivery price. Tell us about narrow roads, gates, or unloading restrictions when requesting your estimate so those details can be considered beforehand.
